Historic Scotland:St Vigeans Crved Stones
The St Vigeans collection of carved stones came into the care of Historic Scotland in the 1960s. It is a hugely important collection of over 30 Pictish stones housed in a cottage in the charming village of St Vigeans, near Arbroath.
We are currently working to conserve the stones and are making plans to re-display the museum. The project aims to better care for the carved stones and to increase visitors’ enjoyment and understanding of the collection.

The museum is therefore closed to the public but information on the stones can be obtained from Historic Scotland. The museum will re-open in 2009.

Until then, we are keen to stay in touch with all Pictish Art Society members and we will use this website to post updates of the project. For example, we are planning a community consultation evening in early 2008, where we would like to hold a discussion on the future plans of the museum. We will announce the date on the website. If you would like to get in touch with us about anything, please call Jennifer Webster, Interpretation Officer on 0131 668 8979.

THE PICTS were the true ancestors of the Scottish nation - our indigenous people. While it is known that they lived in Scotland in the first millennium AD, and their territory was taken over by the Scots in the 9th century, little else is definite. What has mainly survived is the great heritage of their carved symbol stones which remain for us to study and cherish. The Pictish Arts Society forms a focus for study and discussion of all aspects of Pictish and arly Scottish history.

The Pictish Arts Society (PAS) was founded in 1988 to affirm the importance of Pictish culture in Scotland's past - a past which inspires the present. The Society forms a focus for study and discussion, but its activities are not narrowly restricted, and through a broad approach to the life and times of the Picts we strive to place them more clearly in their Dark Age and wider context. The Pictish Arts Society is a Registered Scottish Charity SC026529 donations and contributions welcome.
